The aim of this chapter is to illustrate the importance of mindfulness and its mechanisms, namely autonomous motivation, and emotion regulation, in identity-defining goal pursuit. It will review the state of research on the associations between mindfulness and goal setting, planning, enacting, and disengagement as proposed by Heckhausen and Gollwitzer in their Rubicon Model. Studies examining the link between mindfulness and autonomous goal selection and pursuit will be presented. The influence mindfulness can exert on goal setting and internalization processes through increased self-knowledge, for instance, will be discussed. Within the goal implementation and pursuit subsection, the role of mindfulness in preventing and helping manage difficulties and action crises for identity-defining goals will be highlighted. Finally, the role of mindfulness in goal disengagement and re-engagement processes will be the third major subsection of this chapter. Theoretical, empirical, and practical implications will be discussed and propositions for constructive research avenues, considering the challenges of goal research, and especially of goal disengagement, will be made.

摘要
