The first major contribution of this book lies in its effort to foreground the central role of schools in the development of colonial Australian sport. While Australian sports historians have acknowledged the importance of educational institutions, the depth of their influence has been largely overlooked. More generally, the relationship between senior sport and junior sport in Australia, particularly school-based sport, remains underexplored and lacks sustained analytical scrutiny. As previously noted, Richard Cashman’s seminal work on the development of organised sport in Australia devotes limited attention to junior sport, including its presence within schools. Instead, his analysis centres predominantly on elite and adult sporting practices, with a particular emphasis on commercialisation and the influence of popular culture.
