In the mid-nineteenth century, with the codification of soccer in 1863 and rugby union in 1871, two football codes came to dominate the British football landscape. Scholars have extensively examined how these two codes, soccer and rugby union, evolved in Britain. However, in colonial Australia, soccer was largely sidelined. Instead, the competition for football dominance occurred between rugby union football and Australian rules football. By 1887, the battle for football supremacy in the Australian colonies was largely settled: New South Wales and Queensland adopted rugby union football, while Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and Western Australia became strongholds of Australian rules football.
