Social Isolation and Family Dynamics: The Pandemic’s Social Impact

This chapter examines how the COVID-19 pandemicCOVID-19 pandemic – Japan reshaped the social lives of LGBTQ+ individuals in Japan, focusing on isolation, family dynamics, and the psychological toll of prolonged confinement. Drawing on first-person narratives, the chapter explores how forced cohabitation with unsupportive family members led to increased emotional distress, misgendering, and, a return to the closet. Youth and young adults who had once found independence in urban queer-friendly spaces were especially vulnerable, as they were compelled to navigate heteronormative environments that suppressed their identities. The chapter also investigates the broader mental healthMental health – LGBTQ+ during pandemic impact of losing access to LGBTQ+ social networks, such as bars, cafésLGBTQ+ cafés – Japan, and community centers. These spaces, which function as critical sites of identity affirmation and solidarity, were replaced by digital platforms that, while vital, could not fully replicate the sense of belonging offered by in-person connections. Through the voices of diverse participants, the chapter illustrates how the pandemic amplified structural inequalities while inspiring new strategies of resilience—from digital peer-support networksDigital peer-support networks to quiet acts of defiance within domestic spaces. These narratives underscore the need for inclusive policies and mental health support systems attuned to the realities of LGBTQ+ lives in Japan.
