This chapter reviews studies of legal reasoning in relation to its definitions, tradition, and methods. It mainly focuses on the studies of legal reasoning in judicial opinions, especially those with a linguistic perspective. It also reviews the three contemporary traditions in genre studies and justifies the adoption of Systemic Functional Linguistics’ genre theory. Ultimately, it clarifies the gap in current research on describing and modeling judicial opinions from a genre perspective.
