In the present era, obesity is increasing at a very fast rate, which predisposes overweight and obese women to various pregnancy-related difficulties when they become pregnant. A study reports an alarming 18–38% increase in cases of obese pregnant women, which may lead to cases of foetal complications (macrosomia, congenital complications), maternal complications (hypertension, gestational diabetes), or obstetric complications. These obesity-related complications pose a great threat to the lives of both the foetus and the mother. This chapter focuses on the strategies that can aid in reducing complications in pregnant women during pregnancy. This chapter also focuses on various published guidelines and recommendations that are helpful for women who are overweight and obese, with a BMI greater than 25. The recommendations made are divided into four categories: care before conception, diet and physical workout during pregnancy, advice for management of pregnancy-related problems, and postpartum care. The recommendations, along with the suggestions from various guidelines mentioned in this chapter, may help overweight and obese women plan their pregnancies and reduce the risks associated with obesity for both the mother and the foetus.
