India and Italy: Re-energising the Partnership
摘要
India-Italy relations can be divided into three critical timelines. The first was during the Cold War when both countries were striving for a place in global politics. In the post–Cold War era, relations cooled considerably due to various setbacks, including the arrest and trial of Italian marines accused of gunning down two Indian fishermen off the coast of Kerala in 2012 and the cancellation of the AgustaWestland deal over allegations of breach of contractual obligations and kickbacks. During the third phase, India’s growing importance in world politics led to a recalibration of relations in a multipolar world culminating in a strategic partnership in 2023. The chapter assesses the trajectory of Indo-Italian relations and how they are re-engaging to expand the scope and content of their strategic partnership.
