Developing Speaking Competence

This chapter discusses the development of young learners’ oral English skills to illuminate the considerations and issues in teaching of speaking and sheds light on the aspects of knowledge of content and language, instruction, learning and learners. It highlights the importance of creating conducive contexts for talk to allay students’ apprehensions and promote their participation in small group and class discussions. Underscoring the value of customized instruction, it presents possibilities for the design of tasks aligned with students’ interests to meaningfully engage them in the learning process. These actions, together with scaffolding on the language and ideas for speaking, can significantly enhance their competence. The chapter concludes with implications for teaching and learning.
