Growing concern about the world’s waste problem has led to increasing efforts towards achieving environmental sustainability. One of the most promising approaches to reducing waste throughout a product’s lifecycle is designing durable, resource-efficient, and environmentally friendly products. In this chapter, we discuss the synergies of advanced manufacturing technology, new material development, and design techniques that can cooperatively prolong product lifetimes. Utilizing case studies and literature, it assesses key strategies, including modular design, repairability, and circular economy integration, that enable prolonged product use and reduced material degradation. The study also examines the facilitating influence of industry partnerships, regulatory policies, and consumer behaviors on the market penetration of sustainable durables. This paper holds theoretical interest and policy relevance, as it integrates technical, economic, and social analyses to inform the transition to sustainable production and consumption. It is further evidence of the need to design for durability as a lever to attain global sustainability objectives and decrease ecological land demand.
