Nature’s bounty is inherently limited, and current rates of human consumption will inevitably lead to the exhaustion of such bounty. What then are the appropriate rules to govern our collective use of environmental resources the high urbanization rate and increasing population have resulted in the continuous release of large quantities of waste into the environment. Furthermore, from cradle to grave, linear waste handling systems face significant difficulties in meeting environmental and economic sustainability objectives due to the take–make–dispose paradigm. In this chapter, several key problems associated with such systems are discussed, including high energy costs, significant environmental damage, and resource depletion. It also highlights the economic burden resulting from waste management, particularly due to low recycling rates and the ultimate loss of value from these materials. Additionally, the chapter examines the broader social and ecological implications of linear systems, including heightened toxicity, pressure on land use, threats to public health, and increased social disparities.
