Roegneria K. Koch is a perennial grass endemic to Eurasia, mainly distributed in Central and East Asia, with only one species, Roegneria panormitana (parl.) Nevski is native to Mediterranean and South-east Europe. According to the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, it should be a legal genus. The type species contains a specific STY genome (Jensen and Wang 1991; Lu and von Bothmer 1993; Redinbaugh et al. 2000).
