The mind–body problem has been a point of contention in Western philosophy, and a source of tension between Christian theology and science, ever since Plato and Descartes proclaimed a fundamental distinction between the mental and the physical. This précis reviews the materialistic approaches favored by Western philosophers and draws on the Dalai Lama’s statements on Buddhism and science to enrich the dialogue between faith and reason.
