Biochar-Assisted Phytostabilization of Heavy Metal-Polluted Land
摘要
The contamination of soils with heavy metals is strictly connected with the intensive development of industry, progressing urbanization, agriculture, and mining. The search for effective and safe methods of cultivation in areas degraded with heavy metals plays a key role in the current times. The technique of phytostabilization has found its application in immobilizing excessive heavy metals in soil. It is often supplemented with biochar, which is considered a promising and effective material to enhance the process. This approach has gained considerable attention due to its potential to reduce the negative impact of heavy metals on soil and the environment. The present chapter contains the role of biochar in aided phytostabilization and the accompanying mechanisms that take place throughout the process in connection with the physicochemical properties of biochar. Moreover, the most recent examples of applying this material in phytostabilization are described.
