This chapter examines the fusion of nationalism and Islam in the political strategies of three pivotal Muslim political leaders, revealing how religious identity becomes a powerful tool for nation-building and political mobilisation. Through compelling case studies of Mahathir Mohamad’s Malay nationalism, Nawaz Sharif’s pragmatic mix of religious, civic, and ethnic nationalism, and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s rearticulation of Turkish nationalism to a neo-Ottoman project, the chapter demonstrates how Muslim political leaders strategically deploy nationalist discourse to consolidate power and reshape national identity.
