This introductory chapter serves as the gateway to the book’s core objective: a comparative analysis of three powerful Muslim political leaders’ tenure as prime ministers (and later president for Recep Tayyip Erdogan) and how they use Islam for their political gains. Although they all entered political arenas legitimately by participating in and then winning their country’s subsequent general elections, words such as “draconian” and “hegemonic” have also been attached to these leaders’ legacy, especially in relation to their instrumentalisation of Islam in politics and its impacts. By laying the groundwork for this comparative exploration, the chapter sets the stage for an examination of the complex dynamics that have been dominant in the policies of Islamist politicians like Mahathir Mohamad, Nawaz Sharif, and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

This introductory chapter serves as the gateway to the book’s core objective: a comparative analysis of three powerful Muslim political leaders’ tenure as prime ministers (and later president for Recep Tayyip Erdogan) and how they use Islam for their political gains.
