The Gut-Brain Axis (GBA) is an evolving communication process using immunological, hormonal, metabolic, and neurological routes to connect our gut and brain. Central to this axis is the gut microbiota (GM), a diverse microbial community essential in shaping how our brain develops, functions, and ages. This chapter delves into how these gut microbes influence memory, mood, and mental clarity by producing key molecules like short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), neurotransmitter building blocks, and immune signals. When this microbial balance is disturbed, a state known as dysbiosis, it can contribute to conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s disease (PD), as well as anxiety and depression. The chapter also highlights how everyday choices like diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management can positively influence our gut microbes and, in turn, support brain health. Popular nutritional strategies, including the Mediterranean, ketogenic, and MIND diets, are explored alongside lifestyle practices that enhance resilience. It also examines emerging therapies such as prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics, fecal microbiota, and transplantation (FMT) and advanced tools like Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) and artificial intelligence (AI) that offer exciting new ways to tailor treatments to individuals. Ultimately, by understanding and supporting the gut-brain connection, we may unlock powerful ways to maintain mental sharpness, emotional well-being, and cognitive vitality throughout life.
