The complex interaction between brain aging and metabolism has become a central theme in neuroscience studies, with important roles in cognitive well-being and longevity. This chapter delves into the complex relationships among nutritional aspects, metabolic processes, and brain health during aging. The research began by analyzing the essential association between brain aging and metabolism, emphasizing how age-related metabolic variations can directly affect cognitive performance. Major nutrients that are important for sustaining brain function and cognitive ability with aging were identified, and their mechanisms of action were explained. Exploring the negative impact of oxidative stress and inflammation on the aging brain with special reference to the possible protective action of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients in modulating cognitive deterioration. Certain vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids have been explored for their roles in brain metabolism and overall cognition during life. Dietary habits, with special reference to the Mediterranean diet, were assessed in terms of their influence on brain health and cognition in the elderly. In addition, this chapter investigates the possible mechanisms by which nutrients modulate brain metabolism and neuroplasticity, offering insights into how nutrition interacts with complex cognitive functions. Recent evidence for and against nutritional interventions to prevent or retard cognitive decline in old age is critically reviewed to provide valuable insights into possible therapeutic approaches. Finally, we examined the challenges and limitations inherent in studying the role of nutrition in brain metabolism and aging. These findings present a balanced view of the current state of affairs and identify areas for future research. By clarifying the complex interrelation between metabolic activities, nutritional determinants, and brain health, this research adds to the expanding evidence base for devising effective strategies to ensure healthy brain aging and prevent age-related cognitive impairment.
