Halim Seeds (Garden Cress): The Ancient Seed of Iron and Immunity

The garden cress seed (Lepidium sativum L.) is an underutilized plant that plays a vital role as nutritional and medicinal plant in India. It belongs to family cruciferae/brassicaceae. It is originated from highland region of Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is fast growing annual herbaceous plant, mainly cultivated for seeds. Water-soaked seed is mucilage. In addition to vitamins like carotene, riboflavin, thiamine, niacin, dietary fiber, calcium, and protein, these are abundant sources of folate, iron, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Numerous health benefits, including anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antianemic, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, antipyretic, and analgesic qualities, are found in halim seeds. It helps in the prevention of many diseases such as anemia, menstrual cycle disorders, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, bone diseases, and many skin diseases. It is beneficial for memory enhancement, boosting milk production in nursing moms, etc. It is used in various industrial sectors like food industry, cosmetic industry, and pharmaceutical industry. It is cool-season crop. It grows in all types of soils, but well-draining soil with pH of 6.0–8.5 is ideal for its cultivation. It is propagated by seeds (8–10 kg/ha). It is mature after 90 days of sowing. The average seed yield is 10–12 quintals per hectare in un-irrigated areas and 14–16 quintals per hectare in irrigated areas. The market price of its seeds generally ranges from Rs. 7000 to 8000 per kg. Dahiwala bread, brioche bread, biscuits high in omega-3 fatty acids and iron, vegetable oils mixed with garden cress oil rich in alpha-linoleic acid, fortified burfi, fortified chikki, ladoo, noodles, cookies, flakes, and other foods and beverages are all fortified with garden cress seeds to improve their nutritional and functional qualities.
