Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive brain disorder that gradually impairs memory and the ability to learn, reason, judge, communicate, and perform daily activities. In neurodegeneration models, preparations of Lepidium meyenii, commonly referred to as maca, have demonstrated encouraging outcomes in reducing clinical signs and symptoms. Maca preparations, particularly some of their bioactive compounds like macamide, have demonstrated promising neuroprotective effects in recent in vitro and in vivo studies. Even so, more research is needed to understand the neuroprotective mechanisms of maca preparations. Moreover, the claimed health effects are not supported by clinical trials. To maximize value perceptions, it is advised to innovate products and diversify the ways that different parts of maca are used in food and nonfood applications. In this chapter, a detailed compilation and analysis of in vitro and in vivo studies regarding the role of different maca preparations as neuroprotective agents are presented. Maca preparations could play an important role in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and memory deficits.

摘要
