Ballooning and Burst Behavior of Cr-Coated Zr Alloy Cladding Under LOCA Conditions
摘要
In order to investigate the effect of Cr-coating on the ballooning and burst behavior of zirconium alloy cladding under loss of coolant accident (LOCA) conditions, transient burst tests were performed on pressurized Cr-coated and un-coated zirconium alloy tubes under steam environment. Results show that 15 μm Cr-coating had no substantial effect on cladding rupture temperatures under the same internal pressure conditions. But the Cr-coated tubes had smaller expansion diameter and opening area during ballooning and burst process, indicating smaller hoop strain at the burst position than the un-coated ones. The Cr-coating reduced and developed through-cracks at high ballooning region, allowing potential rapid oxidation of underlying zirconium.
