摘要

This chapter focuses on the tomato industry in Zambia as a case study to explore the complex interplay between business operations, social inequalities, and environmental sustainability. Drawing on secondary literature and industry reports, the study identifies key challenges facing the sector, including inefficiencies in waste management, persistent social disparities, fragmented distribution networks, limited market access, financial constraints, and the dual pressures of regulatory compliance and climate change. By analyzing the tomato value chain, from production and processing to marketing, the research underscores the need for targeted strategies to address social inequities and promote environmentally sustainable practices. The chapter emphasizes the role of technology adoption in enhancing operational efficiency and reducing environmental footprints. It also explores methodologies for measuring and reporting the social and environmental impact of business practices. Policy recommendations are proposed to create a more enabling environment for the sector, while the study acknowledges its limitations, particularly its reliance on secondary data. Finally, the chapter outlines future research directions, highlighting the potential for Zambia’s tomato industry to be a driver of positive social and environmental change.
