Action-Oriented Framework to Institutionalize Sustainable Development Goals Among Higher Educational Institutions and Its Impact on Developing Transformational Leadership

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are gaining more prominence today across developing and developed countries to spur economic growth while being accountable for societal prosperity and environmental protection. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) play a critical role in building sustainable societies by empowering students who are the future decision-makers. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) equip the students with pertinent knowledge, skills, competencies, and values to lead change and innovation toward sustainable development to tackle local, regional, and global challenges. However, the degree of involvement of HEIs in sustainable development varies significantly, depending on their strengths and weaknesses as they navigate the path forward. This chapter aims at having a microscopic look at worldwide initiatives that support capacity building for SDGs by HEIs. It also details barriers faced, best practices followed, and the role of accreditation bodies and global ranking authorities in emphasizing sustainability stewardship by HEIs through campus life and community inclusion. A three-tier, action-oriented ‘Relevance-Resonance-Reach’ framework to accelerate SDGs integration through HEIs is detailed in this chapter. In the age of environmental crisis, this framework will facilitate the seamless transitioning of learners and future leaders toward a sustainable vision. It will also strengthen long-term, sustainable, value-based outcomes for society and contribute to building a brighter future for everybody.
