This chapter discusses the Portuguese embassy’s reception in Guangzhou in 1517. At first, Captain Fernão Peres de Andrade was quietly led into the city through the false embassy system of the Foreign Trade Eunuch. But when the scholar officials discovered his presence, he was shifted into the official tribute system. Eventually, the Supreme Commander and the Foreign Trade Eunuch reached a compromise on how to deal with the newcomers.
