With this chapter, the main body of the book begins. It discusses the arrival of Portuguese merchants in China around 1513 and their commercial activities. It argues that they blended into the regular flow of coastal trade, depending on local partners and trading in local goods. Thus they were able to participate in the island trade policy of the Supreme Commander of Guangdong-Guangxi.
