The Rise of Yang Tinghe and the Fall of the Embassy, 1521

In April 1521, the Zhengde Emperor passed away. During the interregnum period, the Grand Secretary Yang Tinghe ruled the empire. He punished his factional rivals: dismissing the Supreme Commander and abolishing his trade policy, banishing the Minister of War and restoring traditional tribute policy, denouncing the Foreign Trade Eunuch. In this political shift, the Portuguese embassy was dismissed.
