Gout is a metabolic disorder, which typically presents with recurring attacks of a red, painful, hot, and swollen joint. Gout is often known as “the disease of kings” or “rich man’s disease.” There is a disturbance in the metabolism of urates, resulting in the deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals within the joints along with soft tissues. Although hyperuricemia is the main pathology, gout does not occur in all hyperuricemic patients, and there are other factors like genetic predisposition which has a role to play in the incidence. Only 5% of people with uric acid level more than 9 mg/dL develop gout.
