Rickets and Osteomalacia
摘要
Rickets is a metabolic bone disease of children (before fusion of epiphysis) with clinical features of softening of the bones and deformities. It is caused by deficient or delayed mineralization of osteoid matrix at the growth plate due to inadequate calcium and phosphate deposition occurring prior to physeal closure. The growth plate fails to mineralize while cartilage and osteoid continue to expand. Patients present with characteristic features such as bowing of long bones, ligamentous laxity, brittle bones, and enlargement of costal cartilage.
