Poliomyelitis is an infectious disease caused by an enterovirus. The polio virus is of high infectivity, with the route of infection being via the human gastrointestinal tract. Before the introduction of vaccines, type 1 poliovirus accounted for 85% of paralytic disease. Thus, the musculoskeletal system is one of primarily affected system of the body. Implemenation of immunization drive on a global scale has resulted in the eradication of poliomyelitis from most countries.
