Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by mycobacterium leprae. It is an acid-fast bacillus with a predilection for cooler places such as skin, peripheral nerves, anterior chamber of eye, upper respiratory tract and testes. Leprosy is a common problem in India with an incidence of 4.56 per 10,000 population. The prevalence rate of leprosy is 0.4 per 10,000 population in the country. Thirty per cent of the cases have an orthopaedic problem and nerve involvement at initial diagnosis.
