This paper investigates the combined effect of heat treatment and cold working on 12Cr21 duplex stainless steel. Five different temperatures were selected for solution treatment in the range of 900–1080 °C with a cold reduction of 15 and 30%. The tensile properties (0.2%YS, UTS & %El), hardness, microstructural analysis and ferrite content were measured in solution treated and cold worked condition. Solution treatment at 950 °C showed higher strength (than other temperatures like 900, 1000, 1040 and 1080 °C), whereas solution treatment at 1080 °C showed higher elongation due to change in austenitic/ferritic phase contents, compared to other temperatures. The results showed that thermo-mechanical treatment with 15% cold working with prior solution annealing at 1000 °C was found to impart balanced strength and elongation.
