The Role of Microalgae in Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
摘要
There is a need to sustain microalgae wastewater treatment systems. These systems are evaluated for their technological, operational, environmental, and economic challenges in large-scale microalgae processes. Microalgae reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and nutrient recovery, though challenges abound. Technological and economic challenges include land use limits, ideal growth conditions, potential contamination from hazardous bacteria and invasive species, and high operational expenses for CO₂ extraction. Despite these challenges, microalgae have substantial prospects for improving water quality and furthering clean water and sanitation. This review emphasizes the significance of conducting complete life-cycle assessments, economic evaluations, and strategic management methods to maximize the viability of microalgae-based wastewater treatment systems and their potential contribution to global sustainability.
