Sustainability Aspects in Digital Textile Printing
摘要
If we are concerned about nature, environment, and climate change, then we are heading towards the dream of a Sustainable World. In order to achieve this dream, sustainable development is required, which simply means “Fulfilment of present needs without compromising the ability to fulfil future demands.” This chapter deals with the various ways of achieving environmental sustainability through the 3R concept (i.e., Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) of textile waste, specifically in the Garment & Fashion Industry as well as the products which are not used up to their average limit. The 3R concept in textiles can serve as a means of providing solutions to many economic, environmental and social issues. The tempting arrival of the latest trend in the market makes it difficult for one to be satisfied with what they already have, which leads to over-purchase of new products and less usage of existing ones, which is not used even up to the average limit. Though textile recycling has a past history, in recent years it has gained prime importance due to the fast-changing fashion culture in the Western world which has resulted in overconsumption of textiles with less usage and corresponding waste generation. Innovations are made in terms of methods of applying this concept in every textile good possible, development of recycling machinery, design inputs, and innovative products with value addition to make recycling a profitable business. The various efforts made by industries and small recycling units aim to achieve a higher recycling rate in the textile industry to achieve sustainability. There are a number of textile industries that offer recycling of post-consumer waste. The brands offer innovative and sustainable textile solutions from 100% recycled materials. The ultimate goal is to keep textiles away from landfills by repurposing them into new apparel, closing the loop in the fashion industry. This chapter will highlight prevailing recycling practices, which are mechanical as well as chemical, and provide their efficacy in recycling textile waste into reusable products. Also, the idea of upcycling will be included as a novel measure for recycling waste material into high-value-added products, which will decrease virgin resource requirements and reduce waste generation. The chapter will also highlight the need for cooperation between stakeholders, such as designers, manufacturers, retailers, and consumers, to bring about sustainable change. Also, the latest development in fashion sustainability, for example, the emergence of circular fashion platforms and sustainable business models, will offer useful insights on the future of green practices in the fashion sector.
