A Holistic Approach to Learning Environments

A holistic approach to learning environments recognises the complex interplay between physical, pedagogical, and psychosocial dimensions in shaping meaningful educational experiences. Rather than treating these domains in isolation, this integrated perspective underscores the importance of alignment and mutual reinforcement across space, practice, and relationships. The physical environment—which encompasses the tangible spaces where learning occurs, including their design, layout, and resources—sets the stage for how learning can occur through influencing mobility, interaction, and sensory experience. The pedagogical environment comprises the beliefs, strategies, and instructional models that guide teaching and learning processes, framing what is valued and how it is enacted in practice. The psychosocial environment reflects the relational and emotional climate of a setting, including trust, inclusion, autonomy, and a sense of belonging. Drawing on interdisciplinary research, this chapter argues that sustainable improvement in learning outcomes and the wellbeing of learners depends on the strategic alignment of these three domains. In this chapter, we propose a holistic model that supports a dynamic and relational understanding of learning environments as ecosystems. Such a perspective is vital for navigating the complexities of contemporary education and for cultivating environments that truly support all learners. The model offers a conceptual framework in which physical, pedagogical, and psychosocial elements continuously interact to influence learner engagement, agency, and achievement. The chapter provides practical strategies to support educational leaders, architects, and teachers in co-designing environments that are responsive, adaptable, and learner-centred.
