Nonfarmed mushrooms have been desired for their ecological roles, bioactive compounds, and special nutritional value. They constitute a vital part of the human diet, abundant in essential nutrients such as proteins, vitamins, and minerals. The bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides, β-glucans, polyphenols, and terpenoids, give health benefits such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and cardiovascular benefits. Cultivation of nonfarmed mushrooms is more complicated than commercial cultivation of mushrooms because of their complex ecological relationships. Furthermore, these mushrooms often need soil composition, moisture level, and microbial interactions, which are hard to regulate in farmed cultivation. This chapter briefly describes the importance of nonfarmed mushrooms, their types, ecology, and importance for human health (medicinal and nutritional aspects), and their reason for complexity. It emphasizes their significance, the challenges associated with their production, and the problems related to their commercial cultivation. In addition, it describes key limitations, including substrate specificity, obligate symbiotic associations, and strict environmental requirements that inhibit commercial cultivation.
