Permafrost and Engineering Property
摘要
This chapter primarily elaborates on the characteristics of permafrost distribution, thickness, temperature, permafrost table, and ground ice in typical regions, including the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, the Daxing’anling and Xiaoxing’anling Mountains in Northeast China, as well as the high mountainous areas in western China. Based on the exposition of engineering problems associated with frozen soil, this chapter details the engineering properties of frozen soil, encompassing frost heaving, thawing subsidence, and frozen soil strength. Meanwhile, drawing on the analysis of permafrost thermal stability, the selection of design principles for frozen soil foundations and the investigation methods for permafrost engineering are systematically discussed. Finally, from the dual perspectives of permafrost engineering foundations safety and environmental protection, the significance of permafrost environmental protection is expounded.
