China’s international trade expansion and rapid technological advancement lie in the heart of the Sino-US tensions as China’s ambition to grow assertively clashes with the US’s aggressive defence to protect its global power status. Misunderstanding breeds mistrust which has aggravated the tension build-up. However, when the elephants dance, as the saying goes, it is not safe for the chickens. The elephants are the US and China, and the chickens are the rest of the world, notably the smaller emerging economies, who could get crushed. We examine the trade conflict in this chapter and assess the “tech war” in the next chapter.
