Fears about China’s “giant sucking soundgiant sucking sound” hollowing out other countries’ jobs have morphed into fears about its “banging sound” invading the world’s economy and dominating it with the Chinese system. The blind fears have led to misguided policies, notably trade and investment protectionismprotectionism, led by the US through tariffs and export and foreign investment restrictions to force China to decouple from the global system since 2018.
