How do you improve a university which has enjoyed a 900-year reputation for excellence (Brockliss LWB. The University of Oxford: a history. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2016))? For the University of Oxford, the answer is to change its student body. Oxford students are more likely than the average British citizen to be rich, white and from the southeast of England. A more diverse student body would improve Oxford’s education and research. It is clear that working class students and those from an ethnic minority can make valuable contributions to the University’s work. Beyond this, failing to open up the University to students from all backgrounds risks both its status and its capacity to attract talent in future. To improve, therefore, Oxford has had to become more accessible and less exclusive. This chapter does not argue the case for why Oxford needs to diversify but focusses on how the University is going about it.
