This paper presents TactiCall, a self-contained wristband designed to enable users with hearing difficulties to “feel” their environment. First, the unmet need for unsignaled alerts among hearing-impaired adults living alone is characterized. Next, a few-shot learning pipeline for four common household sounds is implemented on a smartphone, and the hardware and firmware design of the haptic wristband are detailed. Finally, a pilot study is reported in which hearing-intact participants identified vibration patterns with an accuracy of 96.9 percent, demonstrating TactiCall’s potential as an intuitive and easy-to-set-up assistive device.

摘要
