While social robots are increasingly used to support people with disabilities, their potential for adults with both cognitive and visual impairments remains understudied. This exploratory study first identified the emotional support needs and robot design requirements of these individuals and their caregivers. A small user study with three participants revealed positive engagement with the social robot, particularly appreciation for its soft exterior and personalized content. Participants expressed a desire for longer interactions, but also encountered operational difficulties due to the robot’s design. Overall, their positive responses and willingness to continue use suggest the potential of social robots to support this population.

摘要

While social robots are increasingly used to support people with disabilities, their potential for adults with both cognitive and visual impairments remains understudied. This exploratory study first identified the emotional support needs and robot design requirements of these individuals and their caregivers. A small user study with three participants revealed positive engagement with the social robot, particularly appreciation for its soft exterior and personalized content. Participants expressed a desire for longer interactions, but also encountered operational difficulties due to the robot’s design. Overall, their positive responses and willingness to continue use suggest the potential of social robots to support this population.
