Internationalization of Indian Higher Education: Revisiting the Policies Initiatives
摘要
Over the last few decades, India has made significant strides in various aspects of higher education; however, progress in the area of internationalization has been limited. Given the constant demand, the Government of India, through the UGC and a few other bodies, has initiated measures to develop guidelines and policy frameworks; however, these efforts are sporadic. Without regular and structured policies, institutions often struggle to navigate challenges related to networking, student and faculty exchanges, institutional collaborations, the design and launch of joint degree programs, and the establishment of campuses abroad. Consequently, these institutions frequently operate in isolation, missing out on the advantages of shared experiences. To create an environment that promotes internationalization, supportive government policies are essential. The initial apprehension and confusion of academia for opening the frontiers of higher education pose a massive challenge for the government to devise decisive policies on internationalization. This chapter provides an account of the status of internationalization in Indian higher education, discussing the issues and challenges within the country, as well as the existing policies aimed at promoting the internationalization of higher education.
