Affordability and Financial Challenges in the Internationalization of Higher Education in India
摘要
India has a long history as a centre of knowledge and learning in higher education even before the times of Takshashila and Nalanda. New opportunities are emerging for India to reclaim its status as Vishwa Guru. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has placed due emphasis on incorporating an intercultural and global dimension in the HEIs. Considering the significant benefits in terms of academic, cultural, and research output enrichment, HEIs in India have exhibited an overwhelming enthusiasm toward internationalization. However, unique challenges exist both for incoming and outgoing scholars. In this chapter, we discuss the difficulties faced in the recruitment process of international faculty, their expectations and aspirations, and suggest avenues for addressing some of these challenges. The marked disparity in the low numbers of incoming international students and scholars to institutions in India is two-fold. While scholars from economically affluent countries prefer to come on short exchange visits, scholars from underdeveloped and developing countries who wish to register for degree programs may struggle with the associated financial burden. Here, we provide some insights into the affordability and financial issues and discuss processes that may be adopted.
