There are two ways to verify whether people in the Han dynasty sat on stools: one is to consult the pre-Qin and Han literature for relevant records; the other is to seek evidence from the unearthed artifacts of the Han dynasty. The earliest records of stools in ancient China are found during the Jin dynasty (265–420 AD). The object somewhat similar to a jade stool should be a jade table, resembling the short low table or tea table familiar to modern people. The exact date of the appearance of jade tables is not clear, but they may have been used in the early Western Zhou dynasty (BC 1046–771). So far, no jade stools have been discovered, but two jade pillows resembling jade tables in the Western Han dynasty (BC 202–25 AD) have been unearthed in princely tombs.
