How to put an economic value on news is a subject that preoccupies regulators as well as journalism organisations that try to get paid for news they create and publish. This paper provides an overview of different methodologies used to calculate the economic value of news. We explain what these are and how they are used and conclude by noting that the market value—what the new organisations can obtain for the use of their news—ultimately comes down to what large monopolies are willing to pay. Experience shows that they pay far less than what we view as a fair amount.
