摘要
This chapter explores the history, evolution, strategic approaches, and critiques associated with philanthropy’s role in the operation of the U.S. news media. The first section of this chapter provides an overview of the goals that motivate philanthropic engagement with the news media, with an eye towards how these goals have evolved as the technological, economic, and political climates have shifted over time. The second section provides an overview of the key philanthropic participants engaged with supporting the news media; how these organisations came to devote themselves to supporting the news media; and how this landscape has evolved. The third section explores the wide-ranging, and developing, strategies that the philanthropic community has utilised to support the news media. The fourth section examines a variety of critiques that have been directed at the philanthropies supporting the news media. The concluding section considers the future of the role of philanthropy in the news media, in light of recent political developments and the continuing evolution of the media landscape.
