This chapter critically examines the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism, focusing on the rise of generative AI (GenAI) and its implications for journalistic autonomy and authority. Building on previous research into automated journalism, we revisit early optimism about AI’s capacity to relieve journalists of menial tasks and redirect their focus towards in-depth, investigative reporting. However, recent advances—particularly with the advent of large language models such as ChatGPT—have sparked renewed concerns over job displacement, declining editorial integrity, and the erosion of journalism’s professional boundaries. Using the theoretical lens of boundary work, the chapter explores how journalists respond to perceived technological threats by reasserting their profession’s ideals, including truth-seeking, accountability, and public service. The analysis underscores both the opportunities and challenges posed by AI’s integration across all stages of the news production process. It calls for newsroom strategies that balance technological innovation with ethical governance, clear editorial values, and upskilled workforce development. Ultimately, the chapter argues that while GenAI disrupts traditional norms, it also offers journalism a renewed chance to reinforce its core functions in the digital age—if navigated thoughtfully.

摘要
