Developing Emotional Capital and Collective Flourishing through Women’s Neighbourhood Groups (WNHGs) in Kerala
摘要
Kudumbashree is an initiative launched in 1997 by the State Poverty Eradication Mission (SPEM) of the Government of Kerala, India. It is a state-sponsored initiative that aims to eradicate poverty and empower women. However, its distinctiveness lies in the collective awareness of neighbours to address local problems, positioning it apart from conventional women’s empowerment and development programmes in India. Kudumbashree’s primary feature is its community network, which is built upon Women’s Neighbourhood Groups (WNHGs). Strong social cohesion and a shared cultural environment contribute to the collective’s ability to recognise and address their needs and concerns. Nevertheless, Kudumbashree WNHGs serve as a platform for personal development and subsequent collective advancement to tackle significant gender-related concerns in Kerala, such as dowry and the limited visibility of women in public spaces. WNHGs engage in the domains of environmental concerns, palliative care, disaster response, etc. The first section of the paper discusses Kudumbashree’s origin and politics, particularly in light of the social cynicism against Kudumbashree as a women’s collective. Emotional connectivity and cultural bonding are crucial for the collective consciousness to function optimally and achieve well-being. Kudumbashree is an organic women’s movement that developed through individual sharing, which distinguishes it from other development programmes. Empirical data was collected from interviews with the various WNHG members from the south Pooppathy village of Poyya Gram panchayat in Kerala to understand their experience working with Kudumbashree WNHG. This paper examines how emotional connections and collective consciousness help address individual problems. It also examines how Kudumbashree’s formal platform relied on personal emotional attachment and neighbourhood cohesion, which led to women’s collective flourishing. This paper aims to demonstrate the positive impact and scope of emotional bonding and social cohesion among Kudumbashree WNHG members for individual well-being and collective flourishing.
