Urban air mobility (UAM) services provided by electric-powered aerial vehicles will lead to a reduction in energy consumption and carbon emissions in the urban transport sector. Urban air transport based on autonomous aerial vehicles will increase the capacity of the coordinated passenger transport network, replacing ground-based single-passenger travel with shared air travel. UAM services, based on advanced electric-powered aircraft, are part of the trend towards a green economy. This paper discusses the legal aspects related to the use of UAM services. In this context, the reasons for the development of UAM services are analysed. Furthermore, this paper discusses various definitions of the term ‘Urban Air Mobility’ as well as the definitions of aircraft suitable for the provision of UAM services. Additionally, this paper analyses the development of the regulatory framework for UAM services in Europe, specifically the new regulatory package 2024. This chapter also discusses the legal aspects of potentially replacing a human pilot with an artificial agent, as well as the privacy issues related to the provision of UAM services.
