Jatra’s Nationalism: Encountering the Bibek
摘要
In this chapter, my purpose is to demonstrate the paradigmatic shift of jatra since the rise in nationalist movements in Bengal, between 1905 and 1912. Considering the nuances of Bengal’s colonial past, I draw on postcolonial theory, focusing primarily on Homi Bhabha’s works, to examine the cultural colonization of Bengal. Bhabha’s analysis of cultural hybridity allows me to explore the dimension of cultural-political-intellectual subjugation during colonial imperialism and the unbalanced postcolonial distribution of power through the evolution of jatra.
