The Shenzhen Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone was originally part of Haifeng County, which belongs to a city named Shanwei. My earliest knowledge of Haifeng came from the article “Running to Hailufeng” written by Marshal Xu Xiangqian, which was included in my middle school Chinese textbook. It impressed me as an old revolutionary base. In 1999, I passed by Haifeng County on a business trip. That morning, I set out from the bustling city of Shenzhen, heading east for more than 100 km until I arrived in Ebu Township, Haifeng County. The car traveled along National Highway 324. Outside the window, large and small patches of farmland stretched across the landscape.
